Let's get started

Our group practice is led by Dr. Nelson Byrne, Psychologist. Our work is guided by the most current psychotherapy research, and we use therapy techniques that have been shown to be the most effective in treating the specific presenting problem.

Some of the typical problems we address can be found at the link below.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) refer to a group of interventions that are based on identifying and changing unhelpful patterns of thinking (your “cognitions”) and behaving to positively impact emotions. While historically cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy developed independently, today most psychotherapists who offer these types of therapies use a combination of both cognitive and behavioural techniques in their work. Thus, this treatment approach is referred to as cognitive-behavioural therapy.

Individual Therapy

Are you having a difficult time handling the struggles in your life? Could you use an expert opinion on what you’re going through, or a non-judgemental ear just to listen? Do you think you could benefit the most from individualized attention? Are you hesitant to talk to others about your problems?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then individual therapy could be the solution you’ve been seeking. Individual therapy differs from group or alternative therapy methods in the way that you are the sole focus of a single therapist who helps you develop and achieve your goals for therapy.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an approach centered around helping individuals foster a keen awareness of their emotions in order to construct a healthier relationship with them. ACT is heavily based on the psychotherapeutic principal of ‘mindfulness’ in which clients are encouraged to acknowledge their emotions as a natural and rational aspect of their lives. Clients are then encouraged to utilize these emotions to guide them into behaviours based on their core principles, beliefs, and goals.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is an approach centered around empowering individuals to manage intense emotions and relationship difficulties. DBT encourages individuals to understand the inherent variation of human emotions as a natural fact of life.

DBT is built upon two foundational goals: acceptance and change. Acceptance encourages individuals to recognize that their emotions and subsequent behaviours are valid responses to their environment. Through this acceptance, individuals are encouraged to recognize their role as active agents in implementing change to manage their emotions and achieve their desired wellness goals.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, or MBCT, is designed for people who suffer repeated bouts of depression or chronic unhappiness. It combines the ideas of cognitive therapy with meditative practices and attitudes based on the cultivation of mindfulness.

Recent research has also shown that people who have been clinically depressed three or more times in their life find that learning mindfulness-based skills helps to considerably reduce their chances of depression returning.
