Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often thought of as a childhood condition, but many adults struggle with symptoms well into adulthood—sometimes without even realizing it. At Connect Cognitive Therapy in Mississauga, we offer adult ADHD assessments, helping Ontario individuals get their diagnosis so they can proceed with treatment options to manage symptoms, and improve their focus, organization, and daily functioning.
ADHD in Children vs. Adults
ADHD is often diagnosed young… if you know what to look for. While children with ADHD often struggle with hyperactivity and impulsivity, adults with ADHD may experience different challenges, particularly after developing coping mechanisms. Adults may:
- Mask their symptoms by overcompensating with rigid routines
- Struggle with chronic procrastination and disorganization
- Experience emotional dysregulation, leading to frustration and burnout
- Have difficulty maintaining long-term focus at work or in conversations
Many adults with ADHD are diagnosed later in life, often after years of struggling with work, relationships, or personal responsibilities. Without an early diagnosis, individuals may develop negative self-perceptions, blaming themselves for difficulties with time management, focus, or impulsivity. They may face years of feeling "lazy" or that they’re "not living up to potential". They may also develop anxiety or depression due to unmanaged symptoms. Receiving an adult ADHD assessment and diagnosis can be overwhelming, but therapy helps individuals reframe their experiences and develop new, practical strategies.
